Statistics?

Georgia Democrats have a bone to pick with an Atlanta-based public-affairs firm that published a poll last week in the presidential race.
According to the telephone survey of about 800 likely Georgia voters, conducted during the four days after the Democratic convention in Boston, President Bush leads Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry 52 percent to 43 percent, with 5 percent undecided.
Those numbers aren’t surprising in a Republican-trending state where Kerry is not expected to spend much time or money.
The Democrats’ beef is over the poll’s methodology. It turns out that Strategic Visions LLC, which represents mostly Republican and non-partisan candidates, weighted the survey assuming that black voters will make up 18 percent of the Election Day turnout.
However, statistics show that percentage has been nearly 23 percent in each of the last three general elections, Georgia Democratic spokesman Emil Runge said in a news release. Black voters tend to support Democrats.
An accurate weighting of the poll would have brought Bush’s lead down to 4 points over Kerry, 49.5 percent to 45.5 percent, according to the Democrats.
“Despite Republican claims to the contrary, the Kerry-Edwards ticket is competitive in Georgia,’’ said Runge.
