I doubt most are in reality. The test is whether gov't should be larger, or smaller, whether we should be running around the world paying blood and treasure, whether gov't should be secret or open, the Amendments trashed or supported....

Etc.

The disconnect is hearing people saying they're for all these wonderful "conservative" things, yet defend the current policies which trash conservative principles

Whether Dean gets past the South or not, its fun watching the both Dems and Repubs try to marginalize him. The current catcall is "Liberal !!", which doesn't fit. But immediate responses from Dean tend to be "let the states make those determinations" in regard to a number of issues like gun control, which pisses off every big-gov't politician in GOP and DEMs who congenitally want federal gov't to be all-powerful.

Compare that to Bush who's carefully scripted "news" events recently mentions he intended to create central federal statutory authority for marriage. "Conservative"? I don't think so.
