Michael: Backward compatibility is important only in two respects:

1. Laptops. Really tight space and power constraints. One drive that can do two things is an advantage.

2. Economics. If the LS-120 can perform two necessary functions for less than the price of a Zip plus a 1.44 FD, that is an advantage.

To answer these two points Iomega must have two things:

1. A swapable laptop Zip drive. They showed this at PC Expo. This allows a laptop owner to buy a Zip drive that plugs into a bay that can also hold a CD-ROM, extra battery, or 1.44FD.

2. Economics. The Zip drive plus 1.44FD must be cheaper than the LS-120 alone. I believe it will be. We won't really know until MKE can actually SHIP the LS-120 in quantity.
