To often union officials care first about themselves and the union's power and prerogatives, only then about the employees, and little if at all about the customers (students in this case), or the long term health of their industry (or success of educational efforts in the US in this case).

Its not that their evil people (I guess some are, but they exist everywhere), but caring about the unions power is what they are incentivised to do, and caring about the union workers above other issues, is their job.

I'm not sure whether this particular program they oppose is a good idea or not, but the reasons for their rejecting it aren't positive.
