Allen: Thanks for the advice; I'll continue trying various permutations of this procedure. I'm starting to think (much as I've tried to avoid it) that a there may be a drive problem (it's a Sony PC). A couple of times I'd get a persistent clicking and the drive would spin indefinitely trying toread the disk. I got that problem fixed but who knows. Daven
