These countries have heavy taxation that hits the poorest people (unlike the US).

I don't see it turning out that way in the US because of the way it's evolved so far. We already have government health care provided for the poorest and the elderly. Were we to go universal, they would not expect to pay. And the impetus for change comes from those who worry about those somewhat better off than the poorest already covered who cannot now afford insurance. The whole idea seems to be to provide "insurance" for those who don't now have it and those who don't now have it for the most part couldn't afford the additional taxes you describe. Politically, couldn't happen.
