But they can prevent you from trade with other Nations--witness Cuba. Government can permit or not permit trade with foreign nations

To "give" anything to Britain without "giving" to Italy or Germany would have violated the neutrality laws of non-intervention. However, if it is simply business for profit it can be rationalized as neutrality.

Yes..it was a violation of International Law to act against a country with whom you were not at war. So Germany quickly declared war.
