Software on Zip is a 1997-1998 story, not 1996.

You've got a bit of chicken-and-egg problem when you talk software distribution media. Software on CD-ROM only started gaining a real foothold in the past two years. Until there is a critical mass of installed Zip drives (probably in the 20+ million range) and there is lower-priced Zip media (25Mb) available, it will be hard to convince software manufacturers to distribute mass-market software on Zip. You may see a trickle of stuff next year, but I expect nothing major until 1998 and beyond.

There has been mention of anti-piracy advantages of software on Zip vs. read-only media like CD-ROM, so that should help provide incentive to move quickly once a reasonable-sized target market exists. The Zip's dual-format capabilities (like the Zip Tools disk, which is both and PC and a Mac disk until first insertion "personalizes" it) suggests some interesting possibilities in this area which I'm sure would be a great interest to many software houses. But the fact remains that today the install base is just too small to justify anything more than experimentation and planning.
