US Monitoring Big Deal

The US government was learned Tuesday to be closely watching the Korean administration to check that no money changes hands in the 'big deal' between conglomerates and also to monitor whether too much interference occurs. A source in Washington revealed Monday that the US Trade Department and semiconductor manufacturer Micron are examining negotiations between Samsung Electronics and Daewoo, and Hyundai and LG Semicon.

The United States Trade Representative (USTR) reported to congress that it is still investigating whether or not the government pressured POSCO to sell steel to domestic consumers at 30% international prices. The primary investigation of Hanbo Steel revealed no administrative money. The probes were conditions added to the US budget regarding loans to Korea.
