TAIPEI, Aug 20 (Reuter) - Some 50 Taiwan companies have forged an alliance to support the K56flex modem, developed by U.S. Rockwell Semiconductor Systems, a unit of Rockwell International Corp <ROK.N>, a statement said on Wednesday.

The alliance was formed on Tuesday by Taiwan's leading modem manufacturers and Internet service providers, the statement issued by semi-official SEEDNet, Taiwan's second largest Internet service provider, said.

"Members of the alliance agree to support the K56flex modem technology and to promote and develop the technology based on K56flex modem," it said.

The high-speed 56-kilobit-per-second computer modems are used to connect computers to the Internet and online services.

SEEDNet began using the technology from Tuesday, allowing an estimated 40,000 users to benefit.

"The K56flex modem technology has become a global trend and it is one of the services all ISPs (Internet service providers)

need to improve," a SEEDNet executive said.

Taiwan has the world's third largest information industry production -- including computer hardware, software, and peripherals.
