Sometimes I think we should let the law take precedence.
And the law should be shaped - more or less - by the will
of the people who are willing to participate in lawmaking.

This willingness can be demonstrated by contributing time
or money to the electoral process. Microsoft forgot to do
either and this decision is just a polite reminder.

This is how it has always worked. Only this time it hit a
stock we happen to have an interest in so we sit up and
notice.
