I tried to pull in up in a "Times" search with no success.

Dave Winer has noted lots of problems with the Times web archives. He's talked with their top people about it and has come away more than a little puzzled. Basically, as I read him, they go back and forth between being cooperative with weblog creators--keeping archives open if linked, implementing RSS so other weblogs can know if new content is published--and closing them off. He guesses they haven't made up their minds yet about the long term plusses and minuses of charging for access to the archives.

I keep thinking someone will commercialize this, as you've pointed out. Rather than pay different small fees to all the places we read online, we pay one fee to one place which aggregates all the archives.
