I think it would be arrogant of me to try and be a mindreader and assign personal motives to this decision by Obama. Plus I heard these very same comments trotted out when Clinton decided to take on the Bosnian situation. Seriously, almost verbatim commentary, but two different presidents.

All that matters to me---at least most of the time---is whether or not I agree with a decision and where I think a particular decision is likely to take the country. Actually, it doesn't even seem important to try and second guess what the motives were, esp. since in the end it always just going to be a guess. I also don't care which side of the aisle generated the decision.

In fact, I'll say this again and it comes from me being raised in a military family. The President is CIF, and to call the exercise of his CIF power a cowardly action and a trifling with other people's lives is subversive. Maybe not by intent, but this kind of rhetoric has that result, don't you think? What good can come of injecting that kind of thinking into the minds of personnel who will be sent into combat and expected to follow orders to the letter?
