While I personally didn't find Bob Hope particularly funny, he had many endearing qualities that made it easy to overlook that and still find him entertaining. I have to agree that the piece was in very bad taste. It probably says a lot about Hitchens that he needed to denigrate both Hope and the legions of people who valued him. I'd expect something like this from Dowd.
