Many young people where I live simply focus on the outward appearence as a means to shock. Bizarrely colored hair, strange clothing, and various piercings are the favorites. What I don't understand is why each generation of parents and grandparents keeps being shocked. After a while, you'd think they'd just accept that teenagers do weird things just because. Instead, there is the perennial group that, like Vendit, sees this rebellion as a threat to something. (I believe Vendit saw piercings as a lack of respect for oneself.) In fact, the rebellions of today are generally less threatening to the rebels and those being rebelled against than in the past. My parent's generation had rebellions that involved things far more serious than the rebellions of my generation. Yet that doesn't stop them complaining. Case in point - the straight-edge punk movement. Basically, someone that is straight-edge rejects all forms of drugs (alcohol and tobacco included.) The punk part is the outwardly bizarre appearence. Most of the time, these people are given the cold shoulder by older people. Everyone is too quick to judge on appearences.
