Korea's 3 mobile firms favour W-CDMA system

SEOUL, July 8 (Reuters) - South Korea's three major telecom service providers favour the W-CDMA system developed by Nokia and Ericsson over Qualcomm's (NasdaqNM:QCOM - news) cdma2000 for the next-generation mobile system, officials said on Friday.

``In a recent public hearing, three major telecom companies said they favoured W-CDMA system over cdma2000 for the third-generation mobile phone system,'' Shin Yong-chul,
chief spokesman for SK Telecom , told Reuters.

But another SK Telecom official said the final decision on the standard for the service called IMT-2000 would be made by the government.

IMT-2000 is a family of standards for third-generation mobile communications services, which offer global roaming,
high-speed Internet access, multimedia and real-time video-conferencing.

South Korea is to announce on Wednesday the procedure for the selection of mobile phone operators to be awarded licences for third-generation mobile phone services. The new services are scheduled to start by early 2002.
