once again, thank you for the good help.

here is what i ended up doing...

by right-clicking autoexec.bat, then choosing edit, i was able to add these two lines:

set temp=c:\temp
set tmp=c:temp

then click file and save.

then i went into filemanager, found the directory named temp, selected all files with a .tmp extension and pressed delete key.

this is what i needed to do to make sure that i have specified a temp directory and that the folder exists, per the GPF and IPF troubleshooting url i posted earlier. a fellow from netscape usersgroup posted back to me with these instructions.

there are other things for me to try (creating a new profile to eliminate possible corruption in netscape data files) but i'm going to run the browser with these changes and see if the crashes go away. if i fix too much stuff, i'll never know what exactly made it right.
