It's a step toward less regulation, and, more communications competition which should be good for the Telcom Equipment makers.

I don't know if you're Canadian, but if you are, you already understand the advantages of having the phone company free to broadcast. Not only does it give them the right to offer video on demand but makes it imperative for them to install high bandwidth systems. I followed Canada's progress for several years and know they're way ahead of the US in this regard. Now, of course, the Internet's driving the technology where before it was VOD.

I would imagine the 2001 transition date won't be too much of a hurdle as that's only 2 1/2 years out and it'll take almost that long before the service is ubiquitous.

Then, again, if BT's run like the Royal Mail maybe your 3002 might apply. :)
