Sunspot, re: "don't rely on low-tech companies to stay low-potential." An interesting thought. I believe more and more managements are beginning to "get it." I worked at a firm where they didn't until just recently, and they still are arguing about Internet strategy. They've turned Internet strategy over to the high-level managers who first got onto the Internet a year ago, and locked out the Internet pioneers from the decision making process. Decisions still are made by committee -- if I told you of the stupid blunders they have made you would be in shock. Meanwhile, Internet-savvy people are leaving the company to work for Internet startups and high tech firms. Others are starting their own businesses as I did.

The inability of Legacy systems to be properly tied to the Internet infrastructure will continue to hold back many firms in the foreseeable future. You have banks that process data monthly for reports unable to provide up-to-the-minute data on transactions via the Web. The whole infrastructure and decision making process needs to be revamped.

Surely, in the long run every company will be an Internet company of sorts. The process will be expedited when the old guard managements are pushed out.

I sort of agree with your statement about image -- but is this really new? Brand always has been an important component in marketing success.
