Mac Voodoo to Erupt

According Techworks' Craig Fryar there are loads of Mac Voodoo games on the way indicating that the technology may reawaken the sleeping Mac game market.

Techworks is readying the 3Dfx based Power3D Macintosh board and has been working with 3Dfx to solicit support for the Mac. According to Techworks Mac Voodoo evangelist, Craig Fryar there are several new games that will shortly be announced for the Mac that will take advantage of the board.

Among the titles discussed were:

 Descent 2
 Descent 3
 Top Gun
 War Birds
 Weekend Warrior
 Myth
 VR Soccer
 VR Golf
 MDK
 Fighter Squadron
 Multiple Ambrosia titles

According to Fryar there are currently 24.9 million Macs in the world of which 6.7 million are PowerPC-based. He maintains that such a market is still potentially lucrative for game developers. >>>>>>

Also from the Q & A section:

Q:
I keep seeing many games supporting the Power VR chipset and others supporting the 3Dfx chipset. Does this mean that for each individual game you would have to have a different video card to take advantage of it?

A:
Yes and no. Games that are made to take advantage of a specific chipset will require that specific card (much in the way a PlayStation game will not play on a Saturn). The difference is that many games will take advantage of common APIs such as Direct3D or OpenGL. While games that support these APIs may not be as nice as versions that take advantage of card specific APIs (GLide or PowerGL) people with accelerators will still see massive advantages over non-accelerated versions. So to answer your question, yes, the PC accelerator world is moving towards a console-like model where games for specific accelerators are becoming more prevalent.

Q:
When is the Mac 3Dfx card coming out, and from what you know, how does it compare with the current line of PC 3Dfx cards in terms of quality?

A:
The card will be available from Techworks for an SRP of $250 in July. Basically, the card is very similar to other 3Dfx boards on the market (in terms of performance and quality) but includes the proper drivers for the Mac.

Q:
The PowerVR chipset has been getting a lot of press recently, and boasts some pretty amazing resolutions and framerates. Is 3Dfx on its way out as the top consumer-level 3D accelerator?

A:
Not at all. The main strength of 3Dfx is the mindshare it holds in the development community. As one could clearly see at both CGDC and E3, 3Dfx is the target platform for just about every accelerated PC game planned. Other cards such as PowerVR are gaining mindshare but still have a
