Oiled penguins have been found on the Northern shores of the Falklands

Agriculture Department pleas for clean-up of oiled penguins
By J. Brock (FINN)

Over the past few weeks oiled penguins have been found on the Northern shores of the
Falklands. Oil from an unknown source has covered several species of penguins, mainly
King penguins.

Several news stories and press articles have explained how to clean the birds and there are
fishing companies that have donated squid so that the birds can be fed whilst unable to go
into the water to feed themselves.

This will be a major problem if not cleared up as the tourist season is shortly to come upon
us. The washing and any treatment of oiled penguins is being organised by the Agriculture
Department on 27355.

Samples of the oil have been sent to the U.K. for analysis. It is not suspected at this time that
the oil comes from any sunken vessel however, Falklands Conservation, who have sent the
oil away, are keen to alert the public as soon as the source has been found out.
