glad I found this thread tonight...wine is a passion. About champagne and sparkling wines: there are over 2000 vintners in Champagne region that are not co-ops and many create estate bottled champagnes, some vintage. I have bought a couple for a party after New Years (for 12/31 I just buy a couple of cases of Paul Cheneau spanish sparkling which fools more people than you might guess)

Cuvee Fiacre (Chartogne Taillet) Merfy (the village) paid $37
Brut Carte Blance (Jean Milan) Oger paid $25 this has been described to me as having a "new pencil nose" but I am willing to carry on.

I think Dom is fine if you need to impress someone but there are many better champagnes out there for less $. I would like 1988 myself, if I had to buy it.
