Re: Compaq

I found it interesting that in an earlier post, Tim stated that the Intel deal was something like a fixed price, plus small increments for large volume shipments.

<<I was wondering about the Compaq thing too. Phoenix ships the BIOS for one of their fastest growing lines, the Presario. Like you, I was hoping that Phoenix would soon take over all their lines. With Phoenix's many BIOS extension, how can an in-house BIOS department keep up? Maybe Phoenix should buyout their BIOS department and have Compaq become a partner too.>>

I imagine it must be very difficult to negotiate a deal. It took years before the deal with Intel was finally consummated. Both Intel and Phoenix have a presence in around Santa Clara, but I don't think Phoenix has anyone in Texas. They'd have to convince some of the engineers to move there for a year, or some of the Compaq folks to go to CA.

Hopefully, Compaq is looking at the Presario deal as a trial run that will be extended if it works out well.

Phoenix might also be able to land Intel's laptop business. The profit margin is probably higher, too. There must be some reason why they projected 50% of the BIOS business in the conference call. From what I can tell, they only have 40% now. So, they must be counting on landing a big fish somewhere.
