That's about an 11K average per student That's hugely expensive. Does this include pension costs? What we have now is the Lindsay generation of teachers beginning to retire in serious numbers - and on generous packages. Each one of them has to be replaced. The overall costs will continue to snowball way beyond what this city can pay. Teachers are not the only ones. The fellow who put in his 20 years cleaning offices working for the city is also eligible to retire with a pension and benefits for life. I doubt that the city will be able to keep up with these obligations, especially with a weakish economy and shrinking revenues. Charging $4 for crossing a city bridge or $110 for a parking meter violation or raising again taxes on cigarettes will not solve the problem.
