Once you are in an established downtrend, four key things must happen for a confirmed reversal to occur:

A peak that is higher than the previous peak must appear on the chart
The subsequent significant trough must be higher than the previous trough
The subsequent significant peak must be higher than the peak in #1.
The next trough must be higher that the trough in #2.
...and finally, prices must move higher than the peak in #3.

This is easiest to see on PnF charts.
