This reminds me of the search for a way to determine longitude a couple of hundred years ago. Several methods were proposed, including giving somehow psychic dogs an injury to require them to howl on schedule, and firing rockets into the air at intervals for ships at sea to fix Greenwich Time.

The method that won was a pocket watch.
