Picked this up from a futures trader on RagingBull:

"The futures players are shorting after the opening pop and then in the after hours they are covering. This gives the illusion of positive futures numbers before the opening. This attracts buyers after the bell hence the jag up in price and then the shorting begins again and so on. Futures markets are open 23 hours a day for trading, and while most people are sleeping, the stage is being set for another day of public misdirection."
