5,000 residents and tourists are gathered at the Mallacoota town boat ramp as the bushfire hit the Australian town. - abc.net.au

"It was pitch black until about five minutes ago, now the sky is red, it's starting to get embers coming out of the sky, the wind is coming directly at us from the west," he told ABC Gippsland this morning.

Thousands at the boat ramp and shore are donning life jackets in preparation to walk into the ocean in a last attempt effort to escape the heat which can kill without flames.

Currently they can hear continued explosions of gas canisters as the town in consumed in the bush fire in the Victorian sea side town near the border with New South Wales.



Australia's unprecedented bushfires have been burning for months, but the new heatwave and high winds have greatly expanded the burn area.
