Bangkok, Thailand (AHN) - A powerful blast ripped through an Islamic university in the southern province of Pattani in Thailand on Sunday morning, shortly after a group of Arab ministers visited the school.

Investigators said the bomb was planted inside a construction site at the mouth of the road that leads to the Yala Islamic College campus in the Yarang district of Pattani.

The blast did injure, however, three policemen who were part of the security contingent for the visiting Arab officials.

Authorities believed the bomb was not intended to harm the visiting Arab ministers but more to embarrass the ruling military junta in Thailand as the explosion occurred 15 minutes after a visit from the Islamic affairs ministers from Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, as well as Thai Interior Minister Aree Wongaraya.

The latest attack happened one day after Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont visited the province, where he stressed that his government would try to reduce violence in the region by supporting Islamic education at all stages, from primary school up to university.

Violence in the region have already claimed over 1,900 lives since 2004. The southernmost provinces of Thailand consist of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala and are predominantly Muslim.
