Implicit in the claim that slavery was and would have remained economically efficient is the idea that blacks would have remained cowed and peaceable workers. I doubt that would have continued to be the case in a triumphant confederacy. Not after coming so close to freedom.

More and more capital would have had to been expended to keep them under less and less control.
