Even if one accepts the claim that slavery was economically efficient in 1850, this does not prove that it would continue to be so. The fact of the matter is that slavery has become extinct in the entire civilized world -- and in most cases, without a brutal bloody civil war. The argument that America could have continued to have slavery until the present time is ridiculous.
