Work starts today to clear a mud slide at the Mount Lyell copper mine near Queenstown on Tasmania's west coast.

The old open cut mine was closed yesterday as a safety precaution.

It follows days of heavy rain which has washed a significant amount of mud into the underground production levels of the mine.

Ian Wakefield from the Australian Workers Union says 140 underground staff have been asked to take leave or do other duties while damage is assessed.

The West Coast Mayor, Darryl Gerrity, says the mine sits in a cloud seeding catchment.

"It's obviously impacting on the mine and the ability to mine," he said.

The mine's manager Scot Clyde says mine inspectors from Workplace Standards have been notified.
