Art, this suit *is* about patents not trade secrets. The two might cross over but probably not a whole lot. The patents are public documents and the trade secrets are not. People infringe patents and misappropriate trade secrets. Proving each is different and so are the defenses. I would not go as far as saying they are apple and oranges but they are distinct enough that I would not pay attention to the case on trade secret when thinking about the patent suit. Also, because patents take a while to obtain they probably deal with technology developed at least 2-5 years ago while trade secrets are dealing with the future.

I would say, however, the patent and trade secret suits stem from the same source: Intel's inabliity to compete in the marketplace. They purchased Level 1 to make DSP chips but no one will buy because Intel competes with everyone. Probably intel invested in Broadcom hoping to keep track of their technology. I would not doubt if Intel is actually "stealing" trade secrets from Broadcom but is protected because they are an investor.

If Intel could, I think they would rather buy Broadcom and bury the company. That way, in the year 2010, we would still be running x86 architecture!!! The writing is on the wall. DSP will replace all CISC, RISC, and VLIW architecture for real time computational power.

By the way, I am not the only person with this view.
