And here I was ready to unload my Seagate shares only to find that Seagate is emphasizing speed over capacity.
When I buy hard disks, I always go with speed over capacity. I like programs to load in 2 to 5 seconds. Anything beyond that is irritating. This probably explains why I seldom ever view large game intros (just press the Enter key, and you're on your way).
In the systems I use at home, I have a Conner (read "Seagate"), a Quantum Fireball, and two Western Digital hard disks. The largest is the Quantum Fireball at 3.2GB, the smallest, a WDC at 1.0GB.
The Conner and the Fireball run at acceptable speeds. The WDC's are--well, how many ways can you spell S-L-O-W. I use Ontrack on the old WDC and Windrenalin on the new WDC to bring them up to a can-use level.
A couple of weeks ago, I shopped around for a disk for my nephew. The Seagates I could find in the 2.5GB size and under appeared slower than those from Quantum, Maxtor, and Fujitsu--at least spec-wise. Did I miss something here?
Regardless, if speed is where Seagate is going, I may just hold on to my shares for awhile. |
