Allen,

I picked up a HP CD-RW a couple of weeks ago and I do suggest some caution. The software that comes with the drive (Adaptec) and the drive firmware seems to be rather buggy.

We have had quite a bit of trouble booting our computer since installing the drive. It seems that the drive gets left in a state that messes up the IDE bus. The only reliable way to boot the computer is to cycle power, which indicates the drive is not reseting properly. We've also had the system GPF during large copy operations.

We called HP support and it seems that they know about these problems for certain machines but didn't offer any solutions. Anyway, it is nice to burn a CD but it takes a fair amount of work to do it with the current drives.

I'll let you know if we find a reliable solution. By the way, I paid over $400 for the internal HP IDE drive.
