Jerry, He knew the answer. He made that statement so we would understand the depths of His spiritual pain. There is another statement that is linked to that one . It refers to the OT sacrificial system and the payment for sin. This is one that refers to sin debt.

"2 Cor 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God."

Notice He was made sin, similar to the idea of the OT sacrifice that took on the sin of the guilty party. When Jesus became sin, He was separated from His Heavenly Father. I refer to it as spiritual death. We all know that sin separates people from God. When this separation occured, the spiritual pain was extremely great. Today, we still take notice that He took our place, so that we might take His. He became sin, we became righteousness. Worthy is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. The debt is paid, the prison doors are open, the sad part is there are many who choose to remain in prison.

1 John 4:16 So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them.

1 John 5:11 And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
1 John 5:12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

God bless you with the truth,

David
