I didn't say anywhere that Americans holding money in 401K plans were stupid, although I would argue that most of them are not really sophisticated investors. There are substantial tax incentives to save money in 401K plans, and employer matches make it even more enticing.

I do believe there is a huge difference between American workers having some retirement savings in 401K plans, and those being the only savings program for them, with no Social Security pensions at all.

It is really difficult to figure out where you are even coming from, Michael, but thanks for your contribution in making Feelings the current number one listing on the SI Hot List!!!!!!!!!!!!!
