Cary,

In some areas it matters less what something is in reality than what people think it is. This is the principal difference between science and the stock market. It's not whether it is true that the budget agreement can drive stock prices up 50%, but simply that someone believes it and has the audacity to state such a belief on national TV. We've come a long way in investor psychology in one week. This is what makes markets so interesting. Outlandish prophesy combined with media madness and naivete may be the first step toward self-fulfillment. We can always correct later. The tulips outside my window are now coming into full blossom!
