Dick, AMAT is much less vulnerable to a short squeeze than a small thinly traded company. It is also easier to borrow. Transaction costs are lower because the bid/asked spread is generally tighter. As the bell-weather of the group, it may also be somewhat more predictible.

While it may be true that smaller companies run some risk of being "crushed", there is an offsetting risk when you short such a company that it could be bought out. ;-)
