Between good friends, that can be true. I wasn't thinking about "between friends". In either case, whether it comes from a true friend or a not-true one, to then say "I was only joking" is a lie. That infers that one didn't mean it, and if one did, then so be it. Cop to it. If the joker doesn't, then every statement, be it joke or other, is suspect.
Now if X thought I looked terrible in this thong (which I don't, by the way. I am smashing) she might ease that admission with humor. But I would need to know that she meant I looked terrible and was trying to ease my middle-aged mind about the fact by using humor to express it. If she didn't like me, or was insensitive, she might make a joke about my appearance that was simply cruel and intended to embarrass me.
