Steve: completely agree. The moment I pressed Enter I felt the joke is ... not funny at all.

some (unordered) points:

1. The big problem in Europe in next half a year will be the winter famine in Russia. In the sense of the film clip "Daimler selling 30MUS$ of S series to N. Korea" with ... those kids watching you with their big eyes.

2. Export - note that Euroland states will have a delta-like drop in terms of what's export and what's not, starting 1.1.99. Order of magnitude 65% down to 20% GNP for Germany. The question of course still is the (non-public) spending.

3. There's a tiny but significant drop in unemployment here in Germany, not entirely due to politics.

4. I desperately wish to be an optimist - I have three kids and I would not like to hear them say "Is this what you planned for me?" At least the Xmas checks for Unicef and oxfam (dont tell my wife) will make me feel less guilty (it's all in the mind and heart I know, but still).

5. All those consultants (Jeff Sachs types) should be made presidents of some typical LDC. Let them suffer. Let them stand in line for bread.
