Sun to formulate telecom team for India

NEW DELHI
GLOBAL IT major, Sun Microsystems, is putting in place a dedicated telecommunication team in India to focus on the growing communications market in the country.

"As part of our exclusive focus on the sector, we are putting in place a special team for India which would look after the products, networks and partnerships," Bill Cowper, director, Asia Pacific, telecom division, Sun Microsystems, said.

He said sun might recruit from India to build up the team which would work in concert with the company's Bangalore research and development centre.

Cowper said there would not be any separate investment for the telecom business. The company had announced an investment of $20 million for research and development in February this year for India.

Sun Microsystems which provides hardware platforms and operating systems to telecom companies is planning to spruce up its presence in the Indian telecom market.

Sun Microsystems's decision to set up a telecom team for India comes at a time when most of the global IT majors are cutting down their existing staff and freezing recruitment due to the slowdown in the US market.

Sources said Sun is currently in a stock-taking situation and there is no large-scale hiring taking place. The company is only hiring a few critical positions. (PTI)
