Absolutely. I don't care about the deterrence factor either (even though we ought to recognize that it is at least non-zero -- the killer wouldn't be able to kill again if he's dead!).

IMO, there is too much risk involved in a mere prison sentence in such cases. The guy will be in prison but what is the guarantee that he won't escape? What if some loony governor or judge releases the killer on parole?

Of course, the death penalty has to be resorted to only in cases where it is a first-degree murder and the identity of the killer is established beyond all doubt. If we don't impose the death penalty in such cases, what we are essentially doing is that we are actually imposing the death penalty on one or more of our innocent fellow-citizens and saying that the victim will be chosen by lottery and the killer will be allowed to pick the unlucky one/s.
