Z, It shouldn't. Did I say it should? I think that self-esteem lessons should be part of a school curriculum.

I think the problem goes much deeper than mere self-esteem, which itself is a symptom.

But you defended teaching about homosexuality in public schools based on the normal stresses of adolescence. You know, cause otherwise kids growing up gay will hate themselves, and others will hate them, etc. etc.

I remember in elementary school there was a fat kid who was constantly picked on by the bullies. I'll never forget one memory where he lied face down on the soccer field crying after getting his ass kicked. Wish I could go back in time and stand up for that kid, even if he was kind of an anti-socialite.

But I don't think that schools should teach that childhood obesity is OK. There are always going to be bullies, there is always going to be ignorance, there is always going to be school cliques and tribalism. We should deal with those problems, but not by glorifying what shouldn't be glorified or what may be controversial.

One more thing. There have been several cases of fights breaking out between black and Hispanic kids in L.A. public schools. I guarantee you that those schools spend a huge part of their time trying to teach these kids about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Cesar Chavez, and other topics of racial diversity. How come they aren't working?
