Nah, the likud doesn't need to split, the dissatisfied can join National Union or one of the other far right parties. Israeli politics is very fractious, but there is a center concensus and it's with Sharon. Sharon has been holding the center all his term; why he went for a Likud vote and not a referendum I don't know. It was a double or nothing throw, and he lost it. A lot depends on how people feel about the PM, and people trust Sharon much more than Bibi, who's a slick character out for number one.
