Europe is definitely thinking hard about wind and solar, they don't like being hostage to the Persian Gulf anymore than we do, plus they accept the climate change theory and will be big losers by the end of the century if it happens the way many scientists think it will--both from rising sea levels on their coasts and, ironically, colder weather as the Gulf Stream weakens.
But, contrary to what people say here, China is also trying to free themselves them fossil fuels as much as they can. They are putting big money into both wind and solar, and, according to Tom Friedman, will be the largest user of both of them sooner rather than later. That doesn't mean that they have stopped building new coal plants, but their political structure allows them the luxury of real long range planning, and they are trying their best to reduce pollution as well as address climate change, since they will be big losers as well if it happens, both from desertification in large parts of their country, and rising sea levels in others. |
