When this story first broke I hadn't yet seen the pictures but I read the list of the names of the accused and was startled that there were so many women. I was wondering when the subject would come up. I've been talking about it with friends and would have mentioned it here but I simply don't know enough about such scenarios to have any opinion whatsoever about what influence that might have.

I'm glad to see she raised the issue, but I would have preferred she raise it as a question rather than an accusation, although I'm aware of her POV so her take doesn't surprise me.

I was not as grossed out by the prisoner treatment as many. For example, I don't see a particular problem with keeping prisoners naked before and during interrogation. That seems to me the equivalent of sleep deprivation, which is an accepted technique, I think. What I thought crossed the line was the sexual twist. Chavez suggests that the sexual twist might come from the sexual tension in a mixed military. Maybe. I'd like to hear some informed discussion of that. But similar acts by all male groups, like the Dialo assault by the NY cops, would suggest otherwise.

I must say that I was particularly disturbed to see there were women involved. I guess that was shame that not only would Americans do that, but American sisters to boot.
