There's also another battle shaping up outside the 'INTC vs. the clones' arena.

Here in MSFT country, the newspapers are pretty excited about the negotiations w/TCI. Apparently, MSFT sees potential dollars in settop boxes that deliver the Internet to living rooms across America. Gates wants to make sure some kind of Windows software is sitting in those boxes. Hence, you have MSFT's purchase of WebTV, investment in Comcast, Progressive Networksm and VExtreme -- and now negotiations with TCI.

Again, MSFT wants to own the standard in a potentially lucrative market and Oracle & Sun want a role in setting those standards. Should be interesting to watch, although I'm not clear what the financial effect all this would have on IDTI.

I think a side-effect of the shift towards cheap pc's that we are all witnessing recently is that the mass consumer market is getting wired into the network. I imagine that can only help accelerate Internet commerce.
