WORLD EXCLUSIVE: HILLARY CAN'T FIND A NEW YORK HOME, REJECTED BY CO-OP BOARD

First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton hopscotched and crisscrossed New York City Monday on a campaign-like swing packed with appearances and intrigue surrounding a possible run for Senate.

But before she declares and makes up her mind to go all the way, she has to find a place to live!

The DRUDGE REPORT has learned that the board at 290 West End Avenue has turned down Hillary's attempt to buy an apartment in the building.

MSNBC's Jeannette Walls was first to report that the first lady and her surrogates were quietly considering a co-op at the location to establish residence.

"At this time, we cannot either confirm or deny that Mrs. Clinton or her representatives are interested in an apartment in the building," Thomas Pasquazi, managing director or ORSID REALTY, which handles sales for the 16-story, pre-World War II building, told the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS months back.

According to real estate and building sources, the first lady was turned down on her financials and on the fact that the quiet building did not want the disruption that she would bring.

Earlier this year White House spokeswoman Julie Mason blasted reports that Hillary was looking on West End, saying "there is absolutely no truth to the rumor."

Ex-White House aide Harold Ickes told reporters that Hillary was not shopping: "This stuff is wildfire." Ickes noted at the time that 290 West End Avenue might be out Clinton's bracket. "You can form a committee to pay legal bills," he said. "You cannot form a committee to raise money for everyday living in New York, or else we'd all have committees."

Apartments at the building vary in price - with a two-bedroom running about $700,000 and a large, eight-room spread fetching as much as $1.5 million.

Director Chris Columbus [HOME ALONE] owns one of the penthouses.

The first lady's new troubles mirror a dilemma that once faced President Nixon.

After he left the White House, Nixon could not find a place to live in New York City. Concerns that he would disrupt the peace eventually forced Richard Nixon and his family out to New Jersey. But even with recent setbacks, close associates of the first lady have become determined to find a place for her to live in Manhattan, it has been learned, if she does not make a run for senate!

"Mrs. Clinton is going to have a very hard time finding a property in the city," one real estate broker familiar with the first lady's search told the DRUDGE REPORT on Monday. "She's wildly popular, and of course security is a concern. No one wants to live around that. She would cause more commotion than Madonna."

At the MATRIX AWARDS for women in communications on Monday, TODAY show star Katie Couric thanked Hillary for taking "time out from apartment hunting here in New York City to present this award."

The first lady may soon be asking Couric if she possibly has a spare room for rent.
