Fixing problems caused by embedded computer chips is, in some
ways, a tougher challenge than correcting Year 2000 problems in a
software program.

Though it's a tedious and labor-intensive process, the coding in
software programs can be revised, line-by-line, to recognize the
new millennium. But the date clock in an embedded computer chip
is often burned into the chip and therefore can't be changed
.

Often ... the only way to fix a chip is to replace it.
